Java FAQ 16 - Thread Interaction

There are three methods of the Object class that let threads interact with each other. All of these methods must be called from within a synchronization.

wait() – lets the thread put itself in a waiting state
notify() – lets a thread tell another thread to come out of the waiting state
notifyAll() – lets a thread tell all other threads to come out of the waiting state
