Java FAQ 11 - What is Autoboxing and Auto-Unboxing?

Autoboxing is the processing of converting primitive-type values to a type-wrapper object. Auto-unboxing is the processing of converting a value stored in a type-wrapper object to a primitive-type value. Sun added them into Java 5 in order to save programmer time from having to write code for boxing and unboxing.
